The Silkie Bantams

Our interest in Bantams began like most other chicken keepers. Where you see this crazy fluffy chicken that has a cool feathery colourful style to it and you just cant resist including it in your brood. Its like a lucky dip to see what sort of baby chicks will come out, some pure white angels and others with fur like brown feathers, the black beauties with white dots and the softer variations of colour.

One thing is for sure and that is the love that little kids have for these funny looking birds. The eggs they lay are also half the size of a standard egg, yet just as tasty which makes them great for young foodies to start eating these healthy nuggets of goodness.

The other noticeable benefit of the bantams is their absolute dedication to sitting on eggs until the job is done. When they decide to go broody, there is no stopping them and they set themselves up in a comfortable nest and then drift off into a trance state until their eggs hatch.

Interestingly, the skin and bones of Silkies is mostly black and they are generally surprisingly small birds once you feel the body through their fluffy feathers.

We do sell the birds to visitors coming to the farm who are usually looking for them as pets for kids.
